Denis Healey Labour Sec of Defence 64-70 and Chancellor 74-79: Dies aged 98 yrs

Newsraid pays its respect to one of the most interesting Politicians of the 20th Century who died last week.The retired Labour politician, often described as “the best prime minister the party never had”, served as Secretary of State for Defence from 1964 to 1970 and Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1974 to 1979 under the premierships of Harold Wilson and James Callaghan.

Lord Healey was in Number 11 when the government was forced to go to the International Monetary Fund for a loan as the UK economy teetered on the brink of collapse in 1976.

It ushered in an era of spending cuts that both earned him the opprobrium of the Labour left and led to defeat by Michael Foot in the election for Labour leader in 1980.
